Immunology with Industrial Placement

Immunology is the science of the body's defence system, the complex network of cells, proteins, and signalling pathways that protects us from infection, cancer, and autoimmune disease. It is one of the most dynamic and clinically significant fields in modern biomedical science, underpinning advances in vaccine development, cancer immunotherapy, transplantation medicine, and the treatment of allergies and autoimmune conditions. Understanding how the immune system distinguishes self from non-self, how it remembers previous encounters with pathogens, and how it can be harnessed or modulated therapeutically, places immunology at the frontier of medicine and biological research.

At Aberdeen this five-year full-time programme gives you a deep grounding in the principles and practice of immunology. You will develop an understanding of innate and adaptive immunity, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of immune responses, the pathology of immunological disorders, and the scientific approaches used to investigate them. The programme is structured to build your knowledge progressively, moving from fundamental cell and molecular biology through to specialist immunological topics and current research questions.

A year abroad is embedded in the programme, allowing you to study immunology in an international context and broaden your research perspective.

Work placement experience is a significant feature of the programme, placing you in a professional research or clinical environment where you can apply your scientific knowledge and develop the professional skills that employers and graduate programmes look for. This industrial placement experience is one of the most valuable aspects of a science degree, helping you build networks and understand how academic science connects to industrial or clinical practice.

Graduates move into careers in pharmaceutical research, biotechnology, clinical laboratory science, vaccine development, hospital immunology departments, public health, and science communication. Many continue to postgraduate study or a PhD in immunology, cell biology, or related biomedical fields, and some go on to graduate-entry medicine or other clinical programmes.
