About this course

Hungarian and Italian is a distinctive bilingual degree that develops serious competence in two European languages with very different linguistic histories and cultural traditions. Hungarian is a Finno-Ugric language, structurally unlike any of its Indo-European neighbours, and the language of a small but culturally vibrant nation at the centre of Europe with a rich literary and musical heritage. Italian, by contrast, is a Romance language descended from Latin, the tongue of one of the great literary and artistic traditions in Western history, from Dante and Boccaccio to Leopardi and Calvino, as well as of a major contemporary European economy and culture.

University College London's four-year BA Hungarian and Italian is a joint honours programme split equally between the two languages. As the course itself describes, you will take modules not only in language, covering speaking, listening, reading, writing, and translation, but also in cultural topics including literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics. The third year is spent abroad, divided between a Hungarian-speaking and an Italian-speaking country, giving you deep language immersion and direct cultural experience that is central to developing genuine bilingual competence.

The wide variety of modules on offer allows you to tailor the degree to your areas of interest. The typical entry tariff is 168 points.

Graduates with Hungarian and Italian are rare and valued in a competitive graduate market. Careers in translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, journalism, the cultural sector, academia, teaching, and the European Union are well-established routes. The combination of two languages with very different structures develops exceptional linguistic awareness as well as practical bilingual communication skills.

Postgraduate study in Hungarian or Italian studies, translation, or European studies is a natural next step.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city with plenty to do …
