Human resource management is the discipline concerned with how organisations attract, develop, manage, and retain the people who do the work. It encompasses recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, employment law and employee relations, workforce planning, and organisational culture. As organisations have come to understand that their people are often their most significant source of competitive advantage, and as the regulatory and ethical dimensions of employment have grown more complex, the demand for professional HR practitioners has grown substantially.

At Roehampton University, this three-year full-time BSc includes a foundation year and a sandwich placement year, along with a work placement component. The foundation year provides a supported entry point for students who need to build academic foundations before the degree proper, and the sandwich year places you in a professional HR environment for an extended period, giving you the practical experience that employers in this field consistently look for. You will study organisational behaviour, employment law, talent management, leadership development, reward and performance management, and the strategic dimensions of people management, developing both the technical HR knowledge and the personal skills needed to influence and support organisational leadership.

Graduates often move directly into HR roles following the placement year, with many securing employment with the organisations where they placed. Typical roles include HR advisor, talent acquisition specialist, learning and development coordinator, and people operations roles in a wide range of sectors. Many graduates go on to pursue Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) qualification as part of their professional development, which is the recognised professional standard in UK HR practice.
