About this course

Human physiology is the scientific study of how the body's systems function, from the electrical signals that control the heart and the biochemical reactions of metabolism to the coordinated responses of the immune system and the mechanics of breathing and movement. It is one of the foundational disciplines of the biomedical sciences, giving you the knowledge base needed to understand health, disease and the biological effects of exercise, nutrition, ageing and clinical intervention. The discipline combines molecular and cellular understanding with the study of whole-organ and whole-body function, asking how individual components work together to sustain life.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year programme develops your understanding of the fundamental principles of human physiology, with the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge research alongside academics and doctoral students. You will study the major physiological systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal, endocrine and immune systems, developing both theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills. A sandwich placement year provides substantial professional experience in a relevant physiological, clinical or research environment, and work placement opportunities throughout the programme connect your study to professional contexts in healthcare and science.

Graduates in human physiology pursue careers in the NHS and healthcare sector, pharmaceutical and clinical research, biotechnology, sports science, public health, physiotherapy, nutrition and dietetics, and biomedical science. Many graduates use the degree as a foundation for further clinical training, including medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy or nursing. Others move into research, pursuing postgraduate study in physiology, biomedical science, pharmacology or a related field.
