Human Geography

Human geography is the study of how people shape and are shaped by the places they inhabit. It engages with some of the biggest questions of contemporary life: how globalisation redistributes wealth and vulnerability, how cities grow and change, how social inequalities are produced and sustained across space, and how cultural identities are formed and contested in a world of mass migration and rapid communication. It is a discipline that connects the abstract forces of economics and politics to the lived realities of real places and communities.

At York St John University, this part-time programme with a foundation year allows you to develop your engagement with human geography at a pace suited to your circumstances. The foundation year provides a structured introduction to the discipline and to university-level study, making it an accessible route for students who want additional academic preparation before entering the main degree. Throughout the programme, you will explore topics including globalisation, urban change, social justice, inequality, cultural identity, migration, and environmental politics, developing your ability to see the world from new perspectives and to ask how it might be changed for the better.

Human geography develops a distinctive combination of skills: spatial thinking, social analysis, research design, quantitative and qualitative methods, and the ability to communicate findings to different audiences. Graduates go on to careers in urban and regional planning, international development, local government, environmental management, policy research, education, the charity sector, and community development. Many continue to postgraduate study in geography, planning, development studies, or related fields, and some pursue research careers that contribute to understanding the forces shaping our world.
