Human Geography with Foundation Year

Human geography is concerned with people: with how they organise their lives in space, how places are shaped by human activity, and how forces such as globalisation, inequality, migration, and cultural change transform the societies and landscapes we inhabit. It asks big questions about social justice, identity, and the relationship between individuals and the broader structures within which they live, and it does so using the distinctive tools of geographical thinking: attention to place, scale, and spatial relationships.

At York St John University, this four-year full-time programme invites you to consider how you can make a difference to communities, locally and globally, by developing a rigorous and compassionate understanding of the forces that shape human lives. You will study urban and rural geographies, migration and diaspora, postcolonial theory, environmental justice, economic geography, and the politics of place, developing both analytical skills and the reflexive capacity to understand your own position in the world. Research methods training equips you to conduct fieldwork, gather and interpret qualitative and quantitative data, and communicate your findings clearly.

The programme includes a foundation year, which builds your academic skills and confidence. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement are all part of the programme, giving you a genuinely rich range of professional and international experience. The typical entry tariff is 88 UCAS points.

Graduates from human geography programmes go on to careers in urban planning, international development, the civil service, NGOs, community organisations, research, education, environmental management, and the charity sector. The combination of spatial thinking, social awareness, and analytical rigour that the degree develops is valued across many professional contexts. Further study options include postgraduate degrees in geography, urban planning, development studies, and social research.
