Human Geography and Sport & Physical Education
Human geography and sport and physical education is a combination that connects the study of place, environment and society with the theory and practice of physical activity, health and education. Human geography asks how people shape and are shaped by the spaces they inhabit, examining topics as varied as urban change, migration, environmental risk, tourism and the social dimensions of landscape. Sport and physical education brings in questions of pedagogy, health, inclusion and the role of physical activity in community and personal wellbeing.
At Liverpool Hope University you will study both disciplines through the lenses of social science and the humanities, investigating human and environment relationships across contexts including urban areas, tourism destinations, small islands and regions exposed to natural hazards. The sport and physical education strand develops your understanding of curriculum design, coaching principles and the social significance of sport and movement for people of all ages and backgrounds. This version of the programme includes a foundation year, giving you a thorough grounding before you begin the main degree, and the full programme runs over four years full time.
A sandwich year, a year abroad and work placement opportunities are all included, giving you substantial professional and international experience alongside your academic study.
Graduates are well suited to careers in teaching, sports development, community health, outdoor education and environmental roles. The combination of geographical understanding and educational practice is especially valuable in settings where social and environmental context matters, such as community sport programmes, health promotion and place-based education initiatives. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in education, geography or sport science, while others move directly into professional roles in schools, local government or sport and leisure organisations.
