Human Embryology and Developmental Biology with Industrial Placement
Human embryology and developmental biology is one of the most fundamental areas of the biological sciences, concerned with the processes by which a single fertilised cell gives rise to the extraordinary complexity of a fully formed organism. At the University of Aberdeen, this five-year, full-time programme includes both a year abroad and an industrial placement, making it one of the most extensively structured undergraduate degrees in this specialist field. The academic curriculum covers embryology from fertilisation and early development through organogenesis and growth, alongside cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and developmental genetics. You will develop strong laboratory skills in a range of techniques used in developmental biology research, including cell and tissue culture, imaging, gene expression analysis, and model organism work.
The industrial placement gives you direct experience of applied developmental biology in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or clinical research context, while the year abroad gives you access to developmental biology research in an international setting.
