Human Biology

Human biology is the scientific study of the human body: how it is structured, how its systems function, how it develops from conception through to old age, and how it responds to disease, injury, and the environment. It is a broad and integrative discipline, drawing on anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, immunology, neuroscience, and epidemiology to build a comprehensive picture of what it means to be a biological human being. At the University of Derby, this part-time programme allows you to study human biology while managing other commitments, with a reduced weekly workload spread across a longer period. A foundation year is available for students who need to build their scientific grounding before the main degree begins. The programme includes sandwich year and year abroad options, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience and to study in an international context alongside your academic development.

Work placement experience is integrated throughout. You will study the body at every level of organisation, from cellular and molecular biology through to organ systems and the whole organism, developing both laboratory skills and the ability to interpret and evaluate scientific evidence.

Graduates from human biology programmes pursue careers in healthcare settings, biomedical research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, public health, science communication, and laboratory-based roles in the NHS and private sector. Many graduates also use the degree as a foundation for professional training in medicine, dentistry, physiotherapy, nursing, or other health professions.
