About this course

History and Russian is a combination that places you at a productive intersection between one of the world's great language traditions and a discipline that trains you to understand the forces of change over time. Russian opens access to an extraordinary literary and cultural heritage spanning Tolstoy and Dostoevsky through to the Soviet avant-garde and contemporary writing, and to a geopolitical tradition whose influence on world affairs continues to be felt acutely. History, taught in the breadth for which Glasgow is known, takes you from medieval to modern times and across the globe, with particular expertise in Scottish, British, European, American and world history.

At the University of Glasgow you will develop language proficiency in Russian alongside advanced study of historical periods and themes chosen from the university's wide-ranging programme. The history side draws on research expertise in areas including slavery studies, gender history, war and intelligence, and genocide studies, giving your historical study genuine depth and critical edge. The combined programme runs over five years full time, reflecting the demands of achieving real competence in a complex language alongside sustained historical study.

A sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities are built into the programme.

Graduates from this combination are well placed for careers in diplomacy, the foreign and civil service, journalism, intelligence and security, international business, translation and interpreting, research and academia. The depth of language competence in Russian alongside strong historical analytical skills is uncommon and valued by employers working on or in relation to Russia and the post-Soviet world. Postgraduate study in Russian studies, European history, international relations, security studies or translation is a natural further step.

I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On th…

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if y…
