History and Mathematics is a combination degree that brings together two disciplines of great intellectual depth and quite different character. History is the study of change and continuity in human society across time, developing the skills of evidence evaluation, causal reasoning and the construction of well-argued historical narratives about how the world came to be as it is. Mathematics is the discipline of rigorous proof, quantitative modelling and abstract pattern, developing analytical precision, logical reasoning and the capacity to work with formal structures and systems in ways that transfer remarkably widely across professional and intellectual life.
At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme includes a year abroad, reflecting the university's commitment to offering international experience even in less conventional degree combinations. You will engage with Glasgow's wide-ranging historical curriculum, from medieval to modern times and across the globe, drawing on research expertise in Scottish, British, European, US and global history, alongside the rigorous mathematical foundations of pure and applied mathematics. The two disciplines are intellectually complementary in ways that may not be immediately obvious: mathematical thinking developed rigour in historical social science, while historical perspective deepens understanding of how mathematical ideas have evolved and been applied across different contexts.
History and Mathematics graduates carry an unusually versatile set of skills into their careers.
