History

History is the academic study of the human past, encompassing the events, processes, structures, and experiences that have made the present world what it is. It is a discipline that trains you to ask searching questions, to evaluate evidence critically, to construct arguments from sources that are always incomplete and sometimes contradictory, and to communicate your findings clearly and persuasively. History is not a fixed body of facts to be memorised; it is an ongoing interpretive conversation about what happened, why it happened, and what it means, and participating in that conversation at degree level is one of the most demanding and rewarding intellectual experiences available.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year degree offers a flexible approach to study, allowing you to engage with history at a pace that fits your circumstances. You will explore historical periods and themes across the span of human experience, developing the source-critical skills and analytical writing abilities that are central to the historian's craft.
