History

History is the study of human experience across time, a discipline that trains you to interrogate evidence, weigh competing accounts, and construct reasoned arguments about how the past shaped the present. Far from being a catalogue of dates and battles, it asks why people made the choices they did, how societies changed and collapsed, and what the consequences of ideas, power, and conflict have been across centuries and continents. The University of Stirling's four-year History programme, which includes a year abroad, positions you within this tradition while giving you the chance to engage with historical cultures beyond the UK.

You will study a wide range of periods and places, from medieval societies and early modern politics to twentieth-century global history, developing the skills to read primary sources critically, assess historical scholarship, and construct well-evidenced interpretations. A year abroad broadens your perspective considerably, giving you first-hand exposure to how different national traditions approach the past, and sharpening your capacity to work independently in an unfamiliar academic environment. Throughout the programme you will work with documents, material culture, and visual sources, learning to handle ambiguity and construct persuasive narratives from incomplete evidence.

These skills translate into a remarkably broad range of careers. History graduates are valued wherever clear analytical thinking, careful reading, and strong written communication matter, which is to say across most professional sectors. Common pathways include work in archiving, heritage and museum curation, publishing, journalism, law, civil service and public administration, teaching, and the charitable sector.

Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in history, law, public policy, or international relations, or move into research and academic roles.
