About this course

History is the disciplined study of the human past, concerned with understanding what happened, why it happened, and what it means, using primary sources, analytical frameworks, and historical argument to recover and interpret events, structures, and experiences that are no longer directly accessible. It encompasses political, social, cultural, economic, intellectual, and environmental history across an extraordinary range of periods, regions, and themes, and it develops the capacity for careful evidence-based reasoning, contextual thinking, and clear writing that are among the most transferable skills any degree can provide.

At Newcastle University, this three-year full-time programme gives you breadth and depth across the discipline, covering British and world history and engaging with the major themes of historical scholarship from the medieval period to the recent past. You will work with primary sources in archives and document collections, engage with the historiographical debates that shape how historians interpret the past, and develop your capacity for independent research and analytical writing. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, providing both professional experience and an international academic dimension.

The placement might involve work in an archive, museum, heritage organisation, or other professional context where historical knowledge and research skills are applicable, while the year abroad gives you the chance to study history at a partner institution and encounter different national historiographical traditions.

History graduates go on to careers in the civil service, law, journalism, education, publishing, heritage, archives, museums, research, international relations, and a wide range of business and professional roles. The analytical rigour, research skills, and writing ability developed through the degree are broadly applicable. The placement year provides professional experience that many employers value highly.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in history or related fields, and some go on to academic careers in historical research and teaching.
