History

History is the study of the past in all its complexity, and at its best it is one of the most intellectually demanding and rewarding disciplines available. It requires you to engage with evidence, construct arguments, interrogate the reliability of sources, understand causation and contingency, and develop the capacity to write clearly and persuasively about complex matters. It teaches you to think across time, to understand how the present has been shaped by forces that extend far back, and to resist the temptation of reducing complex events to simple explanations.

At Warwick, the History degree is renowned for its flexibility and intellectual ambition. You are encouraged to develop an independent view of the historical themes and periods that genuinely excite you, working with a department that pursues history into unexpected territories across social, cultural, political, economic, and global dimensions. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, alongside embedded work placement opportunities, giving you the chance to apply historical skills in professional contexts, to study in a different academic culture, and to build the kind of international perspective that enriches both historical and contemporary understanding.

History graduates are among the most employable in the arts and humanities, because the research, analysis, argumentation, and communication skills the discipline develops are valued across a very wide range of fields. Careers include law, journalism, the civil service, public policy, heritage and museums, archiving, broadcasting, publishing, education, think-tanks, international organisations, and business roles where the ability to contextualise, synthesise, and communicate complex information is at a premium. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in history, law, or related fields, and the doctorate is a common route for those who wish to pursue academic careers.
