History

History is the discipline of understanding the past through careful analysis of the evidence it has left behind, whether in documents, objects, images, oral testimonies, or archaeological remains. More than a chronicle of events, history is a practice of critical inquiry, asking why things happened, how they seemed to those who lived through them, and what the long-term consequences of past decisions and structures have been. It develops the capacity to evaluate evidence, to construct arguments, to understand perspectives very different from your own, and to write with clarity and precision: a set of skills that transfer to almost every professional context.

At Swansea University this three-year full-time programme takes you through more than 1,500 years of history, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present day, developing your analytical and writing skills across a wide range of periods, regions, and themes. You will work with primary sources as well as secondary scholarship, learning to evaluate historical claims and construct well-evidenced arguments of your own. The programme is designed to build the skills that employers across many sectors value, while engaging seriously with the substance of the past in all its complexity and significance.

History graduates are found across an exceptionally wide range of careers. Teaching at secondary and higher education level is a well-established route, as are roles in the civil service, heritage, archiving, journalism, law, publishing, and the charity sector. The analytical and communicative skills the degree builds are valued in consultancy, management, public relations, and policy.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in history, area studies, archives and records management, or related disciplines, with a view to research, academic, or specialist professional careers. The breadth of what a history degree prepares you for is one of its most consistent strengths.
