History

History is the discipline through which human beings attempt to understand and explain their past, reconstructing events, conditions, and experiences from surviving evidence and asking what they meant to those who lived through them. It is a fundamentally interpretive field, in which the same events can be read differently by historians working from different questions, methodologies, and perspectives, and in which the meaning of the past is never settled once and for all.
