History of Art/Scottish History

History of art and Scottish history is a combination that brings together the visual and the historical in a particularly distinctive way, rooted in the specific culture, landscape and artistic traditions of Scotland. History of art seeks to understand how and why paintings, sculptures, buildings and works of design in a variety of media come to look the way they do, placing visual objects in their social, political, economic and intellectual contexts. Scottish history examines the development of Scotland from the medieval period through the Reformation, the Union of Parliaments, the Enlightenment, industrialisation and into the modern era, giving you a deep understanding of the national context within which so much Scottish art was produced.

At the University of Glasgow you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to engage with art history or historical study in an international academic environment. Glasgow is one of Scotland's great cities, with an outstanding range of museums, galleries and historic buildings, and the university's art history and history departments both have strong research reputations. You will develop the visual analytical skills to interpret and evaluate works of art across different periods and media, alongside the historical research skills to contextualise them within Scotland's particular cultural and political story.

Graduates of this combination are well placed for careers in museums, galleries and heritage organisations, particularly those focused on Scottish art and material culture. Art dealing, auction houses, arts administration, cultural policy, publishing, education and journalism are further paths.
