About this course

History is the discipline that asks how the world came to be as it is, and why understanding that past matters for how we navigate the present. It is not simply a catalogue of events: it is a rigorous method of inquiry that trains you to evaluate evidence, weigh competing interpretations, and construct clear, well-reasoned arguments about complex situations. The skills historians develop, including research, critical analysis, synthesis across large bodies of information, and persuasive written communication, are valued across virtually every professional context.

At Leeds Beckett this three-year full-time programme engages directly with the questions that make history urgent in the contemporary world. You will explore how revolution, resistance, empire, protest, inequality, the climate crisis, migration, and the media have shaped the world around us, examining the deep roots of issues that dominate public debate today. The programme takes modern history seriously as both an academic discipline and a civic resource, building your understanding of why the past matters and how historical thinking can illuminate the present.

A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study history at an international institution and experience how different national traditions approach the discipline. This broadens your intellectual and personal horizons while adding an international dimension to your academic record.

Graduates pursue careers in teaching, journalism, public policy, heritage and archives, museum work, publishing, law, the civil service, communications, and broadcasting. History is one of the degrees that employers across the most competitive graduate schemes consistently rate highly, precisely because the analytical and communication skills it develops are genuinely versatile. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in history, international relations, law, or related fields.
