History

There has rarely been a more important time to study history. Understanding the past is essential for making sense of the global, national, and local forces transforming our world, and the analytical skills that historians develop, reading evidence critically, constructing arguments, and communicating clearly, are among the most transferable and valued in any graduate's toolkit. History teaches you to resist easy narratives, to question what you are told, and to understand how things came to be as they are, which is why it continues to be one of the most intellectually rewarding subjects a university offers.

At Edge Hill University, this part-time programme gives you the freedom to follow your passions and explore the history that matters most to you, whether that is British and European history, global and imperial history, social and cultural history, or the history of conflict, politics, and ideas. You will work directly with primary sources, learning to interpret evidence, situate it in context, and construct persuasive historical arguments in well-written and clearly structured prose. A sandwich year in industry, a year abroad, and work placements are all part of the programme, giving you direct professional experience in settings where historical knowledge and analytical skills are applied, including archives, heritage organisations, cultural institutions, and the public sector.

History graduates are valued by employers across many fields for their research capabilities, written communication, and capacity to handle complex and ambiguous material. Careers span journalism, the civil service, law, teaching, heritage and museums, publishing, broadcasting, politics, international development, and the voluntary sector. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in history, archival science, public policy, or related disciplines, building on the analytical foundation the degree provides.
