History and Philosophy

History and philosophy are disciplines with a deep and productive relationship. History provides the empirical record of how human societies have actually lived, organised themselves, thought, and acted over time. Philosophy provides the rigorous conceptual tools to interrogate the assumptions embedded in that record, to ask what knowledge is possible about the past, and to examine the ethical and political questions that history raises.

Together they develop an unusually powerful capacity for critical thinking about both the past and the present.

At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year programme provides genuine intellectual training in both disciplines, built on the premise that understanding the present and anticipating the future requires the ability to study and interpret the past alongside the insights of philosophical theory. In the philosophy strand you will engage with cutting-edge debates in ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and political philosophy, as well as studying key figures in the history of philosophy from Plato and Aristotle through to contemporary thinkers. In the history strand you will develop skills in historical research, source analysis, and argumentation across different periods and geographical areas.

The combination of disciplines produces graduates who can think carefully, argue rigorously, and communicate clearly.

Graduates from history and philosophy programmes are highly valued in roles that require the capacity to engage with complex ideas, construct careful arguments, and communicate with precision and clarity. Law, journalism, the civil service, policy research, education, think-tanks, publishing, consultancy, and philosophy in practice are all common destinations. Further study at postgraduate level in philosophy, history, law, or ethics is also a well-established route, and doctoral research in either discipline is available for those who wish to pursue academic careers.
