History and Journalism, Media and Communication

History and journalism, media and communication are disciplines that each ask important questions about how knowledge is produced, transmitted and understood. History is concerned with evidence from the past, with how accounts of events are constructed and contested, and with the forces that have shaped the world we inhabit. Journalism, media and communication address how information is gathered, verified and communicated in the present, how media organisations work, how audiences make sense of what they consume, and what responsibilities journalists and communicators carry.

Studied together, the two disciplines develop an unusually sharp understanding of how narratives are constructed and how they shape perception.

This four-year full-time degree at the University of Strathclyde has an initially broad-based structure, with the first year introducing you to a range of subjects before you develop depth in your chosen combination. You will develop research and analytical skills through historical study alongside the practical and critical skills that journalism and media education provides. The combination of careful historical thinking and professional media training prepares you to approach stories and sources with both rigour and critical awareness.

Graduates pursue careers in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, communications, content creation, publishing, education, cultural heritage and a wide range of roles where the ability to research, analyse and communicate clearly is valued. The historical dimension of the degree develops a longer perspective on current events that many employers in media and communications find distinctive and valuable. Many graduates go on to further training in journalism through postgraduate programmes, or to postgraduate study in history, media studies or communications.

The combination of both disciplines produces graduates who can think historically about media and journalistically about history.
