History and European Languages

History and European languages is a combination that takes seriously the idea that understanding the past requires reading it in the languages in which it was written, debated and contested. At the University of Dundee, the history component of this four-year degree covers social, cultural and political history from the early modern period to the present day, with particular attention to the British Isles, Europe, the Americas, Africa and India, as the university notes. This breadth ensures you develop a genuinely global historical perspective rather than one confined to a single region or tradition. The European languages strand develops your linguistic competence alongside your reading of literature, society, politics and culture in your chosen language or languages.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a European country, deepen your language skills in an immersive environment and experience a different academic culture.
