Historical Archaeology

Historical archaeology is the discipline that investigates the human past using both material evidence and historical sources, applying the methods of archaeology to periods for which written records also exist. This dual approach allows historical archaeologists to probe the gaps between what was recorded and what was actually lived, recovering the experiences of people who left few written traces and interrogating the assumptions and perspectives embedded in historical texts. The field spans the medieval period, the early modern world, colonialism, and industrialisation, addressing questions about daily life, social organisation, economy, religion, and power.

At the University of Durham, this three-year full-time programme draws on Durham's exceptional research strengths in both history and archaeology to offer an intellectually rich and methodologically rigorous education. You will study the methods of archaeological investigation, from excavation and fieldwork to the analysis of material culture and the interpretation of sites and landscapes, alongside the historical frameworks needed to situate that evidence in time and context. The programme takes you from the spread of the Roman Empire to the Viking world and beyond, examining how archaeology and history illuminate each other in ways neither can achieve alone.
