Hispanic Studies

Hispanic studies is a richly interdisciplinary field that encompasses the Spanish language, the literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America, and the history, politics, and societies of the Spanish-speaking world. It is a field of extraordinary breadth and depth, ranging from medieval Iberian literature and the art of the Golden Age to contemporary Latin American fiction and the politics of the Spanish-speaking diaspora in the United States. Studying it seriously means engaging not just with a language spoken by around 500 million people, but with the diverse and often contested cultures, histories, and identities that inhabit it.

At the University of Warwick this four-year full-time programme gives you the opportunity to explore this breadth in collaboration with recognised experts in the field, developing your Spanish language to a high level of proficiency alongside deep engagement with Hispanic cultures. You will study literature, film, history, and cultural theory, engaging with texts and media from across the Spanish-speaking world and developing the critical and analytical skills that the discipline rewards. A sandwich year with a work placement is incorporated into the degree, providing professional experience alongside your academic development and ensuring you graduate with practical skills as well as linguistic and cultural expertise.

Graduates from Hispanic studies programmes are well placed for careers in teaching, translation, publishing, international business, diplomacy, journalism, and cultural organisations.
