Hispanic Studies and Politics

Hispanic studies and politics is a degree that connects two disciplines whose subject matter is closely intertwined. Spanish and the cultures of the Hispanic world, from Spain itself to the countries of Latin America and the Spanish-speaking communities of the United States, have been shaped by and have shaped political forces in profound ways. Colonial history, independence movements, dictatorships, transitions to democracy, revolutionary politics and contemporary debates about identity and power all run through Hispanic literature, film and culture in ways that make political awareness essential to genuine understanding.

Conversely, the political study of Latin America and Spain is enriched enormously by linguistic and cultural knowledge.

At Queen Mary University of London this four-year full-time programme is taught jointly by the School of the Arts and the School of Politics and International Relations, ensuring that both strands of the degree are delivered by specialists. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required at entry, which means the programme is genuinely open to students who are drawn to both subjects but are beginning their language study from scratch. You will develop Spanish to a high level over the course of the degree, building from foundational communication through to literary and cultural analysis in the language, while simultaneously developing your political knowledge through the study of political theory, comparative politics, international relations and area studies.

Graduates pursue careers in diplomacy, international organisations, the civil service, NGOs, journalism, education, translation, cultural organisations and Latin American-focused business roles. Many go on to postgraduate study in Hispanic studies, politics or international relations. The language specialism combined with political analytical skills is a genuinely distinctive combination in a competitive graduate market.
