Hispanic Studies and Global Sustainable Development
Hispanic studies and global sustainable development is a genuinely distinctive combination, pairing deep linguistic and cultural engagement with the Spanish-speaking world with rigorous interdisciplinary study of one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century. The Spanish-speaking world is home to some of the planet's most biologically diverse ecosystems, from the Amazon rainforest and the Andes to the coasts of Mexico and the Galapagos Islands, and it is also a region where the tensions between development, resource extraction, indigenous rights, climate vulnerability, and environmental protection are played out with particular intensity. Studying both Hispanic culture and sustainable development together therefore has a coherence that goes well beyond the convenience of combining two interesting subjects.
At the University of Warwick, this three-year full-time BASc degree with a sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement develops linguistic and cultural knowledge of the Hispanic world alongside the interdisciplinary analytical tools needed to address sustainability challenges at local, national, and global scales. You will develop your Spanish to a high level alongside engagement with Hispanic literature, history, and cultural identity, while also studying the political, economic, ecological, and social dimensions of sustainable development. The combination produces graduates with specialist knowledge, language competence, and the practical experience gained through placement and year abroad to operate effectively in roles that connect the Hispanic world and the global sustainability agenda.
Graduates are well prepared for careers in international development organisations, environmental NGOs, sustainability consultancy, the civil service, journalism, corporate sustainability roles, and academic research. The combination of Spanish language skills and sustainability expertise is particularly valued in roles working with Latin American communities, governments, and organisations on development and environmental challenges. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in development studies, environmental policy, Spanish or Latin American studies, or sustainability, building specialist expertise for research or senior professional careers at the intersection of these fields.
