Hebrew and Romanian

Hebrew and Romanian is an unusual but intellectually rich combination that brings together two languages from very different traditions. Hebrew is one of the oldest continuously written languages in the world, carrying with it the entire textual heritage of the Jewish tradition from the Hebrew Bible through medieval literature and philosophy to modern Israeli literature, politics and culture. Romanian, the only Romance language of eastern Europe, evolved from Vulgar Latin under Byzantine, Slavic and Ottoman influences, and it gives access to a distinctive literary and cultural tradition as well as to an increasingly significant European country.

Studied together, they offer a genuinely comparative linguistic and cultural education.

At University College London, this four-year full-time degree splits your study equally between the two languages, combining intensive language training with study of the literature, history, film, linguistics and politics associated with each. You will develop proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, writing and translation in both Hebrew and Romanian, building the command of each that opens access to academic study, cultural engagement and professional work across their respective contexts. In the third year, you will spend a year abroad divided between countries where your languages are spoken, giving you immersive linguistic experience that is essential for reaching fluency.

With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a demanding programme.

Graduates from Hebrew and Romanian programmes go on to careers in academia, journalism, translation and interpreting, international organisations, the diplomatic service, Jewish studies institutions, cultural bodies, publishing and international business.
