Hebrew and Norwegian

Hebrew and Norwegian is an exceptional linguistic combination, pairing a Semitic language with deep roots in Jewish scripture, literature, and culture with a North Germanic language that carries a rich literary and cultural tradition of its own and opens access to one of the most prosperous and internationally engaged societies in Europe. Learning two languages as structurally different as Hebrew and Norwegian develops an unusually acute understanding of how languages work and what they reveal about the cultures that use them.

At University College London, this four-year joint Honours programme divides study equally between Hebrew and Norwegian. You will develop all four language skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, in both languages alongside translation and cultural study. Beyond the purely linguistic, you will engage with literature, history, film, linguistics, and politics in the context of both languages, giving you a nuanced understanding of the societies, traditions, and intellectual worlds that each language opens.

The programme is designed to be flexible, allowing you to tailor it toward your particular cultural or linguistic interests. Your third year is spent abroad, split between two countries where your languages are spoken, which is fundamental to developing the fluency and cultural confidence that serious language study requires. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points.

Graduates with combined competence in Hebrew and Norwegian are well placed for careers in diplomacy, international organisations, translation and interpreting, academic research, journalism, cultural institutions, and the broad range of professions that value multilingual capability. Hebrew expertise is particularly valuable in contexts involving Israel and the broader Jewish cultural world, including academic Jewish studies, media, and international relations. Norwegian opens doors in Scandinavia's strong economies and in organisations with Nordic links.
