About this course

Ophthalmic imaging is a specialist area of healthcare science concerned with producing, analysing, and interpreting images of the eye and visual system to support clinical decision-making. The eye provides a unique window into the health of the body, and advances in imaging technology have made ophthalmic science central to the diagnosis and monitoring of conditions ranging from glaucoma and macular degeneration to diabetic eye disease and neurological disorders. Healthcare scientists in this field are involved in a large proportion of all clinical decisions in the NHS ophthalmology service, supporting patients across the full spectrum of eye care.

At the University of Gloucestershire, this three-year full-time programme prepares you to work in this rapidly expanding field. You will develop knowledge in ocular anatomy and physiology, pathology of the eye and visual system, imaging technologies and techniques, and the clinical context in which ophthalmic imaging is used. The programme combines scientific understanding with practical skill development, preparing you to operate imaging equipment to a high standard, to recognise normal and abnormal findings, and to contribute effectively to the clinical team.

Practical placements in NHS and other clinical settings are central to the training, giving you hands-on experience in the environments where you will work after graduation.

Graduates are well-placed to work as healthcare scientists in NHS ophthalmology departments, eye hospitals, and community eye care services. The profession is growing in response to demographic change and the increasing prevalence of sight-threatening conditions in the UK population, meaning graduate employment prospects are strong. Many healthcare scientists in this field go on to develop specialist expertise in particular imaging modalities or clinical areas, and postgraduate study or continuing professional development is supported by the NHS and the professional bodies that govern healthcare science practice.
