Healthcare science in neurophysiology is a specialist clinical discipline concerned with recording, analysing, and interpreting the electrical activity of the nervous system. Neurophysiological investigations help clinicians diagnose and monitor conditions including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathies, sleep disorders, and disorders of the neuromuscular junction. The neurophysiologist works as part of a clinical team, carrying out investigations such as electroencephalography, nerve conduction studies, electromyography, and evoked potentials, and producing reports that contribute directly to patient diagnosis and management.

At Swansea University, this three-year full-time programme provides the specialist training you need to begin a career in this highly skilled clinical field. You will study the anatomy and physiology of the central and peripheral nervous system, the pathological processes that produce neurological disorders, and the technical and interpretive skills required to carry out the full range of neurophysiological investigations. Considerable emphasis is placed on clinical practice, and you will develop both the scientific understanding and the patient-facing skills that the role demands.

Neurophysiology practitioners work in close contact with patients of all ages, including those who may be acutely unwell or distressed, and communication and professionalism are integral to training.

You will also study the physics and engineering principles underlying the instruments used in clinical neurophysiology, quality assurance and clinical governance, and the ethical and safeguarding frameworks relevant to healthcare practice. Graduates from healthcare science in neurophysiology programmes typically enter clinical practice as qualified neurophysiologists within the NHS or the independent sector. Registration with the Academy for Healthcare Science and pursuit of practitioner status through the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists are common professional pathways. Experienced practitioners may develop into senior reporting roles, service management, or specialist research.
