Greek/Politics

Ancient Greek and politics is a combination that brings together the origins of Western political thought and its contemporary manifestations. Ancient Greek literature and philosophy contains some of the most powerful and enduring political ideas ever articulated, from Plato's theory of justice and the ideal state to Aristotle's analysis of constitutions, Thucydides's account of power and decision-making, and the tragedies and comedies that explored Athenian civic life in all its complexity. Politics as a discipline examines the institutions, processes, and ideas that structure power in modern states and international systems.

At Glasgow, you will read (depending on options chosen) Homer and other Greek poets, Athenian tragedies and comedies, orators and historians, and philosophers such as Plato, learning about Greek political and social history, philosophy, religion, and art. Alongside this, you will study politics, engaging with political theory, comparative government, and international relations, and developing the analytical and research skills that political science demands. The programme includes a year abroad, broadening your academic perspective and giving you the opportunity to study in a different scholarly environment.

It runs over four years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 200 points.

Graduates of Greek and politics programmes pursue careers in education, the civil service, journalism, law, policy research, international organisations, and the heritage sector. The combination of close textual reading and contemporary political analysis is valued across professional contexts that reward careful thinking, breadth of knowledge, and the ability to construct and evaluate arguments. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in politics, classical studies, philosophy, or international relations.
