Greek/ Theology & Religious Studies

Ancient Greek opens one of the richest intellectual traditions in human history. The language of Plato, Aristotle, Thucydides, and Homer, it gives direct access to texts that have shaped philosophy, literature, science, and political thought for more than two millennia. Theology and Religious Studies, by contrast, casts a broad net, examining the beliefs, practices, texts, and social forms of religious traditions across history and the contemporary world, and engaging with the profound questions of meaning, ethics, and the relationship between the human and the sacred that religion addresses.

Pairing ancient Greek with this wide-ranging study of religion creates an unusual and intellectually powerful combination.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time degree allows you to develop your proficiency in ancient Greek alongside deep engagement with the content and methods of Theology and Religious Studies. You will read primary texts in their original language, developing the close reading and interpretive skills that working with Greek requires. In theology and religious studies you will engage with Biblical texts, systematic theology, church history, the study of world religions, and the ethical and philosophical questions that religious traditions raise.

The programme includes a year abroad, broadening your international experience and giving you exposure to different scholarly and cultural contexts.

You will develop skills in linguistic analysis, close reading, critical argument, and cross-cultural understanding that are valued across a wide range of careers. The combination of language expertise and theological knowledge is particularly relevant in contexts where careful interpretation of complex texts matters.

Graduates move into careers in academia, teaching, the church and religious organisations, journalism, publishing, the civil service, heritage and cultural institutions, and the law.
