Greek/ Spanish

Greek and Spanish brings together two languages that represent very different chapters in the history of European civilisation: Ancient Greek, the language of the first great works of Western philosophy, drama and historical writing, and Spanish, one of the world's most widely spoken languages, with hundreds of millions of speakers across Europe, Latin America and beyond. Studying them together means developing both the ability to read and interpret some of the foundational texts of Western culture in their original language and the modern linguistic fluency to engage with contemporary Spanish-speaking societies.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year programme develops your Ancient Greek to the level required to engage with classical texts directly, alongside advanced proficiency in Spanish. The Spanish strand is taught by staff who cover a wide range of topics, as the university notes, and includes the opportunity to work with native speakers from different parts of the Spanish-speaking world, providing exposure to the diversity of Spanish as it is actually spoken. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placements, giving you structured opportunities to develop professional experience alongside your linguistic formation.
