About this course

Graphic design is the discipline of visual communication: the practice of using typography, image, colour, and layout to convey ideas, information, and emotions to audiences across print, digital, and environmental media. It is a discipline that combines aesthetic sensibility with rigorous problem-solving, requiring designers to understand the needs of audiences and clients, to generate and develop creative concepts, and to realise those concepts with craft and technical skill. From brand identities and editorial design to digital interfaces and environmental graphics, graphic designers shape the visual world that surrounds us.

At Middlesex University in London, this three-year full-time BA Graphic Design programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who are developing their creative practice and technical skills before entering the full degree. Middlesex has strong industry connections, and the programme is designed to combine expert teaching with hands-on experience that reflects the realities of professional design practice. You will develop skills across the full range of graphic design disciplines, including typography, branding and identity, layout and publication design, digital design for screen and interactive media, and image-making through photography, illustration, and mixed media.

Design thinking and conceptual development are taught alongside technical proficiency, because effective graphic design begins with understanding the problem you are trying to solve.

London's position as a centre of creative and design industry means you have access to an exceptional range of studios, agencies, cultural institutions, and professional events during your studies, and Middlesex's industry connections facilitate engagement with practitioners throughout the programme.

Graduates from graphic design programmes work in design studios, advertising agencies, in-house design teams, publishing houses, digital agencies, and as freelance practitioners. Roles include graphic designer, brand designer, art director, typographer, digital designer, and creative director in more senior positions. Postgraduate study in graphic design, visual communication, or a related creative discipline supports those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research and teaching careers.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the studio culture is incredible — you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city —
