About this course

Graphic design is the practice of communicating ideas, information and emotion through visual form: the arrangement of typography, image, colour and space to create work that informs, persuades, identifies and delights. It is a discipline that combines aesthetic judgment and creative vision with a thorough understanding of how visual communication functions across different media, audiences and contexts. From branding and identity to publication design, digital interfaces, environmental graphics and motion, graphic designers are the professionals who shape the visual language of contemporary culture.

At Edge Hill University, this three-year full-time degree develops your skills from the fundamental principles of design through to emergent techniques in digital, interactive and sustainable design practice. You will work across both print and screen-based formats, building a versatile portfolio that demonstrates your ability to communicate across multiple platforms. Sustainability is woven through the programme, reflecting the profession's growing engagement with the environmental impact of design decisions.

You will develop skills in typography, image-making, brand design, publication layout, digital design and the professional practices that shape a career in the creative industries. The programme includes a sandwich year with work placement opportunities and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional experience and an international perspective on design culture. Typical entry is around 120 UCAS tariff points.

Graduates from graphic design programmes move into roles in design studios, advertising agencies, in-house design departments, publishing houses, digital product companies and as freelance designers. The job market for skilled graphic designers is consistently active, with demand across commercial, cultural and public sector contexts. Many graduates also move into related areas including art direction, UX and interface design, motion graphics, typographic design and brand consultancy.

Further study in graphic design, design research or a specialist visual discipline is available for those who wish to develop their expertise.

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the studio culture is incredible β€” you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” the …
