Government, Policy and Society

Government, policy, and society is an interdisciplinary field that examines how political institutions function, how policies are made and implemented, and how political processes interact with social structures, inequalities, and cultural forces. It brings together political science, sociology, public policy, and social theory to develop a rounded understanding of how power operates, how collective decisions are made, and what their consequences are for different groups in society. At a time when democratic institutions, public services, and social policy are subjects of intense debate and scrutiny, this field has particular relevance and urgency.

At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme takes you through the comparative study of political systems, the analysis of public policy processes, and the sociological examination of how society is organised and stratified. You will engage with theories of the state, democracy, welfare, inequality, and social change, developing the analytical and empirical skills needed to evaluate how government works in practice and to think rigorously about how it might work better. A year abroad is incorporated into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution in another country and gain a comparative perspective on how different political systems and welfare states address similar social challenges.

Graduates from this programme are well positioned for careers in the civil service, local government, policy research, think tanks, political parties, NGOs, international organisations, journalism, and the voluntary sector.
