About this course

Global sustainable development sits at the intersection of some of the most pressing debates of our time: how economic growth can continue in a world of finite resources, how the benefits and costs of development are distributed across populations and generations, and what responsibilities businesses have towards the natural environment and the communities they affect. Business Studies brings the practical dimension: understanding how organisations are managed, how they create value, and how they can be directed towards outcomes that are not purely financial. Studying these two fields together gives you both the critical analytical framework that development debates require and the commercial literacy that a career in the private or public sector demands.

At Warwick you will grapple with the tensions between economic expansion and environmental sustainability, examining them through the lens of development theory, political economy, ecology, and business management. You will explore questions of biodiversity loss, climate justice, supply chain ethics, corporate responsibility, and the governance frameworks that seek to hold business accountable. Business Studies modules give you grounding in strategy, finance, operations, marketing, and organisational behaviour, skills that are essential for anyone wanting to effect change from within commercial organisations rather than simply critique them from outside.

The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, providing direct experience of working in a business or development context and the opportunity to study or volunteer internationally.

Graduates pursue careers in sustainability consulting, corporate social responsibility, international development organisations, environmental policy, NGOs, finance with an ESG focus, and management roles in organisations committed to responsible business practice. Postgraduate study in sustainable business, international development, or environmental policy is also a common route.
