Global Studies with Human Rights

Global studies is an interdisciplinary field that takes the world as its unit of analysis, asking how politics, economics, culture, and power operate across borders and between nations. Human rights adds a specific normative and legal dimension, examining the principles that set out what individuals and communities are entitled to, how those entitlements are protected or violated, and what tools exist to hold states and other actors accountable. Together the two fields offer a framework for understanding some of the most pressing questions of our time: how global inequalities are produced and sustained, why human rights violations persist despite international commitments, and what kinds of action can bring about change.

At the University of Essex, this three-year full-time programme will deepen your understanding of the interconnected world and build genuine expertise in human rights law, theory, and practice. You will engage with debates about sovereignty, justice, migration, conflict, development, and international governance. Essex has a strong reputation in human rights and international studies, and the programme draws on that intellectual community to give you access to rigorous academic work alongside engagement with the real-world institutions and movements that shape the field.

You will develop your confidence in analysing complex situations, constructing arguments, and advocating for rights-based approaches to social and political problems.

The programme develops strong research, writing, and analytical skills. You will learn to work with legal texts, policy documents, academic theory, and empirical evidence, moving fluently between levels of analysis from the global to the local. The ability to think across disciplines and to communicate complex ideas clearly and persuasively is central to the degree.

Graduates from global studies and human rights programmes pursue careers in international organisations, NGOs, government, journalism, law, and the diplomatic service. Many work with organisations focused on refugee rights, climate justice, conflict resolution, or development policy. Postgraduate study in international relations, international law, human rights, or public policy is a natural progression, and many graduates go on to work as researchers, advocates, or policy analysts addressing the global challenges of the coming decades.
