About this course

German and theological studies is a combination that connects two disciplines with a long and deep historical relationship. German is the language of Luther, Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and many of the most significant theologians, biblical scholars and philosophers of religion in the Western tradition. Theology and religious studies examines the nature of religious belief, the interpretation of sacred texts, the history of religious thought, and the ethical and existential questions that belief raises.

Studying them together gives you a richer access to both: German literature and philosophy come alive in new ways when read alongside theological currents, and theological thought is enriched by your ability to engage with major German-language texts in the original.

At the University of St Andrews you will develop your German to a high level of proficiency over four years, following your particular interests by choosing from a broad range of course options that explore the rich cultural heritage of the German-speaking lands. Alongside this, you will engage with theological and religious studies across its full range, from biblical interpretation and systematic theology to ethics, philosophy of religion, and the comparative study of religious traditions. The programme includes a year abroad, typically spent in a German-speaking country, deepening both your language skills and your engagement with living religious culture and thought in a different national context.

Graduates of German and theological studies bring together linguistic competence, cultural depth, and the capacity for sustained reflective and ethical reasoning. Careers include education, pastoral and chaplaincy work, journalism and broadcasting, publishing, international organisations, the civil service and diplomatic service, translation, and the wide range of roles in the charitable, faith-based and cultural sectors where both linguistic ability and ethical sensitivity matter. Postgraduate study in theology, German, translation, ethics, or biblical studies is a natural extension for those who wish to pursue academic or professional theological careers.
