German and Theatre Studies

German and theatre studies is a combination rooted in a genuinely important historical and cultural relationship. The German-speaking world has contributed more to the theory and practice of modern theatre than almost any other tradition: Brecht, Schiller, Kleist, and Heiner Muller, along with the great directors and theorists of the twentieth century, have fundamentally shaped how theatre understands its social function, its relationship to the audience, and the possibilities of the stage. At the University of Warwick, this four-year full-time programme allows you to study German from beginner, post-beginner, or advanced level, making it genuinely accessible regardless of your starting point. You will develop language skills alongside a serious engagement with German literature, history, and contemporary culture. The theatre studies strand covers performance theory, dramatic literature, directing, and the practical skills of making and analysing theatre.

The programme includes a sandwich year in industry and work placement opportunities, both of which provide structured professional experience in contexts relevant to either strand of the degree, whether in German-speaking cultural institutions, theatre companies, or other relevant organisations.
