About this course

German and music studies is a combination with genuine intellectual depth and practical significance. Germany, Austria, and the German-speaking world more broadly have been central to the European musical tradition for centuries, from Bach and Handel through Beethoven, Brahms, and Wagner to the modernist movements of the twentieth century and beyond. To study music in the German cultural context, and to do so with facility in the German language, is to access that tradition with an intimacy and nuance that study in translation cannot quite replicate.

The combination thus has an inherent coherence that distinguishes it from more arbitrary subject pairings.

At Aberdeen this four-year full-time programme develops your German language skills and cultural knowledge alongside the opportunity to study, compose, and perform music with world-renowned composers and musicologists working across all genres, styles, and periods. You will grow as both a linguist and a musician, developing your practical abilities in performance and composition alongside the scholarly and analytical skills of music studies. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to spend time in a German-speaking environment and to experience musical life in the country whose cultural traditions you are studying.

The combination of highly developed language skills and musical understanding creates a graduate profile that is genuinely distinctive and opens a range of career paths in both the musical and the German-speaking worlds.

Graduates move into careers in music performance, music education, arts administration, cultural organisations, translation and interpreting in musical contexts, and roles connected to German-speaking cultural institutions. Many also continue to postgraduate study in German studies, musicology, or related fields.

Exceeded expectations
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” good tr…

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city is a brilli…
