About this course

German and mathematics is a combination that might seem unlikely at first glance, but it reflects a real truth about both disciplines: each rewards deep engagement with structure, precision and the careful development of ideas. German is the most widely spoken first language in Europe, the language of a great scientific and philosophical tradition as well as a major economy, and studying it to degree level means developing not only fluency but a genuine understanding of the literature, history and culture of the German-speaking world. Mathematics, at degree level, is a discipline of proof and abstraction, asking you to construct rigorous arguments and engage with ideas at the frontier of human knowledge.

At St Andrews, this four-year MA programme gives you the time to develop both disciplines to a high standard. You will develop advanced German language skills alongside a deep engagement with German literature, cultural history and the intellectual traditions of the German-speaking lands. In mathematics, you will study the core areas of the discipline, including analysis, algebra, and applied and pure mathematics, building a rigorous mathematical foundation.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you immersive language experience in a German-speaking country, which is the most effective way to develop genuine fluency and cultural understanding.

Graduates of this unusual combination are distinctive in the job market. Careers that value both quantitative precision and language ability include finance and banking in German-speaking markets, scientific and technical translation, data analytics, academic research, teaching and roles in international organisations or companies with European operations. Postgraduate study in mathematics, linguistics, finance or German studies is a natural option.

Genuinely worthwhile
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” goo…
