German and Linguistics

German and linguistics is a combination that allows you to develop genuine fluency in one of Europe's most important languages while also developing a scientific understanding of how language itself works. At the University of York, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you a sustained period of immersion in a German-speaking environment that is indispensable for developing genuine fluency. You will be taught in German from the outset, with a focus on society, politics, and culture alongside linguistic proficiency. If you are starting German from the beginning, the programme is designed to bring you to an advanced level through structured and intensive language teaching.

The linguistics strand develops your understanding of phonology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition, making you a more reflective and analytical language learner. A sandwich year in a professional environment and work placement experience are also part of the programme.

Graduates from German and linguistics programmes are sought after in translation and interpreting, language teaching, international business, publishing, journalism, diplomacy, and applied linguistics.
