About this course

German and linguistics is a combination that gives you both the practical, literary, and cultural depth of studying one of Europe's great languages and the systematic theoretical understanding of how language itself works. German opens the door to one of the richest literary and intellectual traditions in the world, to the societies and cultures of Germany, Austria, and the German-speaking parts of Switzerland, and to one of the world's most important economic and political powers. Linguistics provides the scientific framework for understanding language as a structured system, examining phonology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and the ways language varies across social groups and historical time.

At Edinburgh, which has outstanding departments in both Germanic studies and linguistics, this four-year full-time degree develops your linguistic competence and your analytical understanding of language simultaneously. You will study German language, literature, and culture through a curriculum that builds your ability to read complex texts, to write and speak with increasing fluency, and to understand the historical and cultural contexts of the German-speaking world. The linguistics component develops your ability to analyse language structures, to engage with the major theoretical debates in modern linguistics, and to apply linguistic methods to questions about language acquisition, variation, and change.

The four-year structure allows both disciplines to be pursued with the depth that genuine scholarly engagement requires.

Graduates of German and linguistics programmes move into careers in language education, translation and interpreting, publishing, journalism, the civil service, European organisations, and the many sectors of business and commerce where German language competence is valued. The linguistics training adds additional value in roles concerned with natural language processing, computational linguistics, speech technology, and language teaching methodology. Postgraduate study in German, linguistics, translation, or computational linguistics is available for those who want to deepen their expertise or pursue academic careers.

Highly recommend
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transpo…

A great decision
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost …
