About this course

German and language and linguistics is a combination that develops practical competence in a major European language alongside the scientific study of language as a system and a human faculty. German brings you into one of the richest intellectual and cultural traditions in Europe, and it is a language of significant economic and professional importance in international business, academia, and public life. Linguistics, meanwhile, examines how language works at a deep level, encompassing questions about sound systems, grammatical structures, meaning, language acquisition, and how language varies across communities and changes over time.

At Aberdeen this five-year full-time programme combines highly developed German language skills and cultural knowledge with a fascinating exploration of how human language evolved, how we learn languages, and how they differ and change. The linguistics component gives you a scientific framework for understanding not only German but language in general, developing an analytical perspective on the very medium through which the rest of your degree is conducted. The combination creates a particularly reflective and informed kind of linguist, someone who can use a language expertly and also understand why it works the way it does.

You will develop skills in language analysis, translation, cultural interpretation, and the systematic description of linguistic phenomena, alongside the fluency in German that professional and academic use requires.

Graduates move into careers in translation, interpreting, language teaching, lexicography, language technology, linguistics research, the cultural sector, and international business. Many continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, German, applied linguistics, or related fields.

This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the opportunity to do independent research in the final year is a highlight. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is …

I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city —…
