About this course

Geology is the science of the Earth: its structure, composition, history, and the processes that have shaped it over billions of years. It is a discipline of both fundamental scientific importance and immediate practical relevance. Geologists investigate the physics, chemistry, and history of the Earth through hands-on examination of rocks, minerals, and fossils, as well as through remote sensing, computational modelling, and fieldwork in some of the world's most extraordinary environments.

The questions geology addresses, from understanding deep time to locating resources, assessing natural hazards, and responding to climate change, are among the most consequential in contemporary science.

At the University of Bristol, this four-year programme includes a year of study abroad, situating your geological education in an international context and giving you exposure to different terrains, geological challenges, and scientific cultures. You will develop your understanding of the Earth through direct engagement with its materials and structures, learning to read the history of our planet in rock outcrops, thin sections under the microscope, and geochemical data. You will work with remote sensing techniques to explore inaccessible areas of the Earth's surface and interior, combining field observation with laboratory analysis and quantitative reasoning in ways that prepare you both for research and for professional practice.

Geology graduates work in the energy sector, mining and minerals, environmental consultancy, engineering geology, hydrogeology, the petroleum industry, natural hazards assessment, climate and atmospheric science, academic research, and government geological surveys. The combination of fieldwork skills, laboratory competence, and quantitative analytical ability the degree provides is in demand across all of these areas. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in geology, geophysics, environmental science, or related fields, and the doctorate is a common route for those interested in academic or research careers.
