About this course

Geology is the study of Planet Earth in the fullest sense: its origin, its structure, the processes that have shaped its surface and interior over billions of years, and the record of life and environment preserved in the rocks, fossils and minerals that make up the geological record. It draws on chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics to understand the processes and events that have shaped the Earth system, from the movement of tectonic plates to the evolution of the biosphere, from volcanic eruptions to the formation of mineral deposits and the record of ancient climates stored in sedimentary sequences.

This four-year full-time degree at the University of St Andrews includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study geology in a different national and environmental context and to experience different geological terrains and academic traditions. The programme explores the origin and evolution of the Earth and its biosphere over time, developing strong fieldwork skills alongside laboratory and theoretical competence. You will study mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, palaeontology, geophysics and geochemistry, building the observational and analytical capabilities that geology demands in both field and laboratory settings.

Geology graduates work across a wide range of industries and sectors where Earth science knowledge is essential. Mining, oil and gas, environmental consultancy, engineering geology, hydrogeology, geohazard assessment, national geological surveys, geotechnical engineering and the academic research community all employ geologists regularly. The growing importance of understanding the subsurface for energy transition, carbon storage and critical mineral supply makes geological expertise increasingly relevant in the contemporary economy.

Further study at postgraduate level in geology or earth science is a common route for those pursuing research or specialist professional careers.
