About this course

Geology is the science of the Earth, concerned with understanding the rocks, minerals, and processes that have shaped the planet over billions of years. It examines the composition and structure of the Earth's crust, the forces of plate tectonics that drive mountain building, earthquakes, and volcanism, the processes of erosion and deposition that shape landscapes, and the record of past environments and life preserved in the geological archive. Geology has direct practical significance: it underpins the discovery of mineral resources and fossil fuels, the assessment of natural hazards, the management of groundwater, the understanding of climate change over geological time, and the evaluation of sites for engineering and construction.

At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time BSc in Geology connects rocks, minerals, oceans, the atmosphere, and life as parts of an interconnected dynamic system. You will develop practical, analytical, and research skills through fieldwork, laboratory work, and data analysis, building the toolkit that professional geoscientists use to solve real-world problems. Southampton has strong research activity in earth sciences and excellent laboratory facilities, and fieldwork is a central part of the curriculum, taking you into real geological environments where you apply observation and mapping skills in the field.

You will develop skills in geological mapping, mineral and rock analysis, geophysical methods, stratigraphic interpretation, and scientific writing, alongside the analytical reasoning needed to reconstruct past environments and processes from fragmentary evidence.

Graduates from geology programmes pursue careers in oil and gas exploration, mining, engineering geology, hydrogeology, environmental consultancy, natural hazard assessment, research, and teaching.
