Geology is the science of the Earth: its composition, structure, physical properties, and the dynamic processes that have shaped it over 4.6 billion years. Geologists read the record written in rocks, minerals, and fossils to reconstruct ancient environments, understand how mountain ranges formed and where earthquakes occur, locate the resources that modern civilisation depends upon, and assess the hazards that geological processes pose to human communities. It is a discipline that demands both rigorous scientific reasoning and direct engagement with the physical world through fieldwork.

At the University of Durham you will study this three-year full-time degree, which includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to encounter geological environments and research traditions in a different part of the world. Across the programme you will study mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, palaeontology, geochemistry, and the physical principles that govern geological processes.
